Love In Action

As I reviewed the news today, I was shocked to hear some of the things that were happening. Let me share with you a few that you probably know.

Protester dead, another hurt, after man drives into crowd in Seattle. 14 people killed in cities across the US. Chicago violence erupts during holiday weekend, 67 shot 13 killed. South Carolina night club shooting leaves 2 dead, 8 hurt.

As I read each event, I thought about Dr. Martin Luther King’s, Jr. book “A gift of Love”. In chapter 4, Dr. King explored Luke 23:34. “Then Jesus said, Father forgive them: for they know not what they do”. The chapter was entitled Love in Action.

A few areas in the book that are attention-getters:

First, Dr. King wrote, in chapter 4 “It is a marvelous expression of Jesus’ ability to match words with action”. He continued saying, “It is one of the great tragedies of life that men seldom bridge the gulf between doing and saying”.

What a magnificent lesson!  Generations will rise and fall; men will continue to worship the god of revenge and bow before the altar of retaliation; but ever and again this noble lesson of Calvary will be a nagging reminder that only goodness can drive out evil and only love can conquer hate.

The last paragraph of the chapter Dr. King wrote, “We must see the cross as the magnificent symbol of love conquering hate, and the light of overcoming darkness. But in the mist of this glowing affirmation, let us never forget that our Lord and Master was nailed to that cross because of human blindness. Those who crucified him knew not what they did.
