“Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;”

Colossians 4:2

Sometimes forgotten are things that prayer is designed to do: praise and magnify God, gain forgiveness for Christians, receive our daily bread and aid in the spread of the Gospel. The question is asked what can prayer do?

Prayer is a fundamental matter in living the Christian life. Many have distorted it and made it to be a health and wealth scheme. Others, both Christians and non-believer, are unconvinced of the power of prayer. They did not get what they asked for so they don’t believe in God at all.

So, we ask the question, WHAT CAN PRAYER DO? While there may be many purposes for a thing, learning the essential purposes is paramount. For prayer, the essential purposes are these: To praise and magnify God; to gain forgiveness; to receive; to aid in the spread of the Gospel.

THERE IS POWER IN PRAYER TO PRAISE AND MAGNIFY GOD. Matthew 6:9, “After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name”.

In 1st Timothy 1:17, Paul writes about his conversion, “Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen”.

The Bible says in Ephesians 5:20 the matter of thanksgiving, “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”.

THERE IS POWER IN PRAYER TO GAIN FORGIVENESS FOR CHRISTIANS. The Bible says in 1st John 2:1-2, “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world”. Prayer is where the blood is applied once again, and our souls are cleansed.

THERE IS POWER IN PRAYER TO RECEIVE OUR DAILY BREAD. Jesus taught us to pray for it in Matthew 6:11, “Give us this day our daily bread." Our God is not only our protector, and director, Philippians 4:19 lets us know He will supply, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus”.

Finally, in this sermon on power in prayer we see that prayer is an incredible AID IN THE SPREAD OF THE GOSPEL. Jesus’ aim in coming to this earth was to seek and save the lost, Luke 19:10, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost”.

What Can Prayer Do? It is of primary service in the most important areas of life and existence, time and eternity. Praising and magnifying God. Petitioning for Forgiveness. Providing our daily bread. Spreading the Gospel.

Let us all continue to strive in prayer.
