When Dreams Come True

"And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan. These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report. Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him. And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more."

Genesis 37:1-5

The story begins in chapter 37, but it’s important to read on through chapter 50, to see the work of God. These chapters tell the story of a teenager named Joseph, who had a dream from God.

The Bible informs us about Joseph’s life. Joseph was a direct descendant of Abraham, through Isaac and then through his son Jacob. Joseph was one of the twelve sons of Jacob, and he was his dad’s favorite. The Bible tells us Jacob made Joseph a coat of many colors. This didn’t help Joseph’s reputation among his brothers, who already resented him as their dad’s pet.

Joseph had a dream in which his brothers all bowed down to him. Here’s a thought to hold, if you ever have a dream where your brothers bow down to you, don’t tell your brothers about the dream.

You know the story and what happened, if not please read it. It’s a story of grace and how God orders and directs our steps. Brothers and sisters, it’s a story of love. Psalm 23:6 says, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever”. He is a way maker.

Where are we in Joseph’s story? A guy who was thrown in a pit, sold into slavery, betrayed, imprisoned, forgotten.

Have you ever been abandoned? Left behind? Sold out? Ever had your hopes run dry? Or gone through a whole season of dryness? Got things going in the right direction and then your life took a sudden downward spiral?

It’s amazing that Joseph went through all of this, and yet did not quit. Joseph understood that God was at work the whole time.

There are a few principles we can inject into our circumstances when our dreams crumble.

First, our story is part of God’s story. Joseph was human like you and me, and yet he was in touch with God. How else do you come to understand that what people intended for evil, God intended for good?

Joseph was saying this over his affairs. Brothers are not in charge. Circumstances are not in charge. God is in charge. Joseph never lost sight of God’s love and purpose.

Secondly, God goes the distance. God was with Joseph the whole way. When the situation appears to be eroding from under our feet, the enemy always arrives with the same speech: “If God really loved you, he would do something different for you”.

God always loves us. God is always for us. God always has a plan. Even in situations such as Joseph’s. God is always with us.

The Bible says in Deuteronomy 31:6, “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”

The third thing we adopt is, we must do our best for God. God is with us when we are overlooked or treated unfairly. So, if He is with us, we must do our best. God is right beside us in the process whatever we are going through. So, we must continue to do our best, we must continue to shine.

The fourth area we can take from Joseph’s story is that “comeback is not about payback”. When we get our comeback, it’s a powerful thing to extend grace. God wants us to grow strong in giving grace to others. Giving grace to another person is simply to forgive them, unconditionally, just as God forgave us through Christ.

Lastly, it is a story of salvation. Remember that our struggle is about somebody else’s salvation. Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

May God continue to bless and keep you.
