When You Put It In His Hands

"Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth. I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the LORD. I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;" Psalm 31:5-7

When a circumstance is in your hands you have control of the outcome. You determine the nature of the situation and to a large extent, its planning and execution.

We have come to learn that God is always watching us and directing us. He constantly urges us to follow the divine path and corrects us when we error. The wise among us have learned that it is best to put our lives in his hand from start to finish.

When our lives are in God's hands, we let him pilot us. We don't even try to co-pilot; we just let him give the orders and we execute them. We constantly pray that He will give us wisdom and common sense to navigate the meandering channels of life.

And when life gets tough? Well, when life gets tough, we do the exact same thing; we put it all in His hands.

As Christians, our faith allows us to trust God completely with our lives on this earth and our secured place in the kingdom to come. As each new day begins, we joyfully say, "It's in your hands."

This text focuses on Jesus as he places his circumstance in God's hand. Many will recognize the words of the text as one the last sayings of Jesus on the cross.

As God, He remained omnipotent. He had the power to deal with his circumstance from the resources of heaven as the embodiment of the word among men. However, as a man he was dealing with a situation that was completely out of his control.

As a man, he had been nailed to the cross. As a man, he had been humiliated, beaten, and falsely accused.

At his lowest, weakest point, Jesus called upon God by quoting David in Psalm 31:5 when he said, "Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit." The bible says in Psalm 31:7 David acknowledged that he knew God was aware of his trouble and his situation, but he trusted God to handle it according to His will.

It is worthy to note that while David rejoiced in the knowledge that God was aware of his situation his rejoicing did not assume that because God knew, that the remedy David sought would be received.

Regardless to what action God took regarding his situation he resolved that God would work it out to his good, therefore he rejoiced with just the knowledge that God “considered” his trouble.

As a man, he limited himself to only those responses available to believers who would follow after Him. It is this carnal response that gets our attention because it is in this circumstance that we find ourselves most often. Though facing pain, rejection and death he continued to trust in God, setting an example for all believers to follow.

Today, believers should consider putting three things in God’s hands:

OUR TIMES ARE IN GOD’S HANDS: We are living in dangerous times that seem to defy all logic and good sense.

These are times when pushers are arrested for selling drugs to any and every one that will buy. Every day it seems somebody gets shot, stabbed or dies. These are times when nearly every home has a battery of dead bolt locks, iron bars and burglar alarm-systems to protect their homes when they’re gone and their lives when they are home.

These are dangerous times; yet in all of that despair there is still hope. It is not beyond God’s ability to deal with the situation; he can handle it, if we do not become spiritual vigilantes and try to handle it all by ourselves.

OUR BURDENS ARE IN GOD’S HANDS: Sometimes, those burdens get frustrating. When our hands are full, we get frustrated and sometimes in the quiet of it all we start to feel sorry for ourselves. Yet, David said in Psalm 31:7, that even with his hands full he found a reason to be glad because he knew God knew about his troubles.

He also knew that if God was aware of his trouble that God would respond in his own way, so instead of having a pity party, David said he decided to rejoice. We have the joy of this assurance that our heavenly father, he hears and answers prayer, and he knows, yes he knows, just how much you can bear.”

OUR HANDS ARE IN GOD’S HANDS: In all of David's troubles he constantly trusted in God. He was confident that God would eventually work his situation out to his advantage because he knew that God is "for me”.

The Bible says in Romans 8:28, “All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose." It simply means in times of trouble, trust God to work it out to your advantage. Trust God to twist the events in such a way that you are better off by them. Trust God to manage the affairs of the world in a way that will benefit his children the most.

In God’s hands, the impossible becomes possible and the unreachable becomes attainable!

In God’s hands, waning strength can be restored. I know it’s true because I heard the word say, “They that wait on the Lord, shall renew their strength. They shall mount up on wings as Eagles, they shall run and not be weary, walk and not faint.” In God’s hands, what appears to be lost causes can be changed to acts of restoration.

I’m putting it in God’s hands because, like the savior’s example, I don't know what the future holds, but I know who holds my hand!
